This report explains high level methods to monitor decarbonisation across the aviation sector and for 5 policy areas:

  • system efficiencies
  • sustainable aviation fuels
  • zero-emission flight
  • markets and removals
  • addressing non-CO2 emissions

The report covers a broad range of activities, within but also beyond the Department for Transport’s (DfT) control.  The work aimed to give an overarching view to show where interventions may be most needed over time, to monitor progress in the decarbonisation of aviation.

The report delivers a series of tools and recommendations DfT may use in further monitoring and evaluation activity in relation to aviation and the environment.

It will also inform decisions on:

  • the development and implementation of interventions
  • requirements for additional research
  • planning and delivery of evaluation activities

The report was commissioned and funded by the Department for Transport, but the opinions expressed within the report are solely those of the authors.
