Welsh Language Champion for Defence biography and statement

Updated 1 November 2023

Fiona Scott was born in Bath, Somerset. She moved to a small village in Wales called Trecwn when she was 4, before moving to Scotland when she was 9, as her parents started working for the Ministry of Defence (MOD). Owing to her childhood love of Wales, Fiona completed her degree at Trinity College, Carmarthen; where courses could be taken solely in Welsh, and the history of Wales formed part of the syllabus.

Fiona joined the MOD in 1993, initially working as an administrator in recruitment for retired Military Officers. She holds a large portfolio of jobs mainly based in Bath and Bristol, covering project management; change management and commercial specialisms. In 2003, Fiona moved to the Nuclear Submarine Capability area. She is currently the Defence Nuclear Enterprise Chief Information Officer, working in the Submarine Delivery Agency in Bristol.

Fiona Scott’s Statement

I am delighted and deeply honoured to be appointed as the Ministry of Defence’s Welsh Language Champion. This role highlights the MOD’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity, and to operating bilingually in Wales.  Furthermore, it strengthens our accountability as a public facing organisation, to ensure that we engage effectively with the public in Wales in both English and Welsh. In my role as Welsh Language Champion, I am determined to publicise the MOD Welsh Language Scheme and to represent the Welsh communities who work for us, and alongside us, so that we remain an effective bilingual organisation.
