Details
The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certifies, quality assures and provides consumer protection for microgeneration installations and installers. These consist of small scale renewable electricity technologies such as solar PV, biomass, wind, heat pumps and heat products.
On 20 April 2018, the Scheme transferred to the MCS Service Company Limited, and the MCS Charitable Foundation, an important step towards ensuring the sustainability of renewables and energy efficiency consumer markets in the long-term.
BEIS remains committed to the scheme and will be a member of the MCS Company’s Stakeholder Advisory Group, alongside industry and consumer stakeholders. This group has an advisory role only, it is not a decision-making body.
In line with the recommendation published on the Each Home Counts: an independent review website, MCS and Trustmark are working together to deliver the Quality Mark, part of the quality and standards framework planned through the review.
Background
MCS has certified over a million installations since it was launched in 2007 and has nearly 2,000 currently registered installers. The scheme has played an important part in the growth of the installation of renewables in homes and small businesses in the UK, helping to drive up standards.
The standards are developed by technical working groups, with members from industry who contribute their valuable time and expertise on a voluntary basis.
