Details of the application

Melbreak Renewable Energy C.I.C has applied to the Environment Agency for two licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The first application is for a full licence to abstract (take) water from Mill Beck at Buttermere at National Grid Reference (NGR) NY 17865 17345.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 720 cubic metres an hour

  • 17,280 cubic metres a day

  • 6,324,480 cubic metres a year

  • At an instantaneous rate of 200 litres per second.

The water will be used for hydropower generation.

Melbreak Renewable Energy C.I.C has also applied to the Environment Agency for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of Mill Beck, also at NGR NY 17865 17345.

By means of a new weir, water will be impounded to facilitate the abstraction of water to the hydropower scheme via a pipeline. All water will be returned to Mill Beck at NGR NY 17517 17006.
