Matching a DNA sample at a crime scene

Published 18 December 2014

A DNA profile can be obtained from biological material originating from a non-secretor individual (where the use of the term “non-secretor” relates to the biological condition where the ABO blood-type antigens are not detected in body fluids other than blood) if sufficient DNA is present within the sample obtained at a crime scene. If a DNA profile using a compatible DNA test is obtained from the crime scene sample, this can then be speculatively searched against other records retained on the National DNA Database. This was the case prior to, during and since 2008.
