The Environment Agency has received a new bespoke application for an environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 from Engie Renewable Gases UK Limited.

Section 5.4 Part A(1)(b)(i) - Application is for a new bespoke installation permit application for the proposed operation of an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Facility at their site in Sherburn-in Elmet. The proposed AD plant will accept up to 100,000 tonnes per annum of feedstock including manure and slurries, maize, silage, whole crop rye, vegetable waste and potato rejects from Home Farm and other local farms. Biogas produced by the digestion process will primarily be upgraded to biomethane for injection into the local gas distribution network, with onsite utilisation in a biogas boiler to provide heat to the site processes when required.
Additionally, carbon dioxide removed from the biogas during upgrading will be exported for use in the food and drinks industry. Two natural gas generators (3MWth) will provide electricity to the plant. The AD facility will meet the definition of an “installation” under EPR Regulations by virtue of the schedule 1, namely Section 5.4 Part A(1)(b)(i) Recovery or a mix of recovery and disposal of non-hazardous waste with a capacity exceeding 75 tonnes per day (or 100 tonnes per day if the only waste treatment activity is anaerobic digestion) involving Biological Treatment.
