Details of the application

Lightwater Quarries Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a full licence to abstract water from a lagoon filled from underground strata consisting of magnesium limestone within Potgate Quarry in North Stainley for mineral washing and concrete production use within a boundary formed by straight lines running between the following National Grid References: SE 27858 75770, SE 28013 75863, SE 28057 75844 and SE 27937 75712.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

Mineral Washing

  • 262 cubic metres an hour
  • 2,014 cubic metres a day
  • 483,360 cubic metres a year

Concrete Production

  • a maximum aggregate rate 262 cubic metres an hour
  • 5.6 cubic metres a day
  • 1,344 cubic metres a year

Further details are: the majority of water abstracted for the purpose of mineral washing will be returned to the lagoon for subsequent re-abstraction.
