Applies to England

An application has been made to the Environment Agency by Leeds City Council. The Environment Agency are required to give notice of this application.

The application is for two licences to obstruct or impede the flow of the River Aire at National Grid Reference SE 32233 31359 (Knostrop Weir) and SE 30800 33100 (Crown Point Weir).

The object of impounding water by means of the works is part of the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme (LFAS). Existing concrete weirs will be altered and replaced by moveable weirs. The weirs are designed to manage flood risk between Leeds Railway Station and Knostrop Weir. The weirs will be in the raised position until there is a risk of flooding, and lowered to reduce the water level upstream of the structures during a flood event. Eel and fish passes will be installed on both weirs to facilitate upstream migration.

Please note the plans make reference to a hydro-electric power (HEP) scheme associated with the replacement of Knostrop Weir as part of the LFAS. No further details have been submitted. The HEP scheme will be determined via a separate application at a later date.
