Rule 3: ICT shall be developed with respect to the relevant domain architecture

Updated 16 October 2023

The rules are under review and subject to change.

1. Rule requirement

1.1 Architectural compliance

ICT shall conform to all technical architectures developed by the relevant authorities using the system of systems approach (SOSA).

Projects shall obtain compliance approval from each of the relevant Domain Authorities in accordance with JSP 604 part 1 section 2 – enterprise architecture.

ISS DESIGN Arch is the C4 domain architect and as such will review from an end-to-end perspective.

2. Rule rationale

Defence has a vision of what the future ICT capabilities should look like and needs to make cognisant decisions to converge towards the future state.

An architectural approach to engineering ICT solutions is fundamental to deliver this future state. The Defence Information Reference Model (DIRM) provides the MOD with an Enterprise Architectural approach to ICT solutions.
