Joint Fraud Taskforce board minutes: 11 July 2023

Welcomes

The Security Minister opened the Joint Fraud Taskforce and welcomed the Anti-Fraud Champion, Anthony Browne MP, and Number 10 officials.

The Security Minister noted that we would now be turning to implementation of the fraud strategy, following its publication.

Fraud Strategy

The Anti-Fraud Champion provided a high-level update on delivery of the Fraud Strategy and completed actions thus far.

City of London Police provided an update on recruitment for the National Fraud Squad and the replacement of Action Fraud.

Members discussed the importance of consumer awareness and the need for a victim-focussed approach when tackling fraud.

Online Fraud Charter

The Anti-Fraud Champion updated members on the progress of the charter and wider government work on online fraud.

There was general agreement from members on the signatories in scope.

Points were raised about how it would be useful to differentiate actions for the different business models, and members flagged commitments that they thought would be beneficial to include.

techUK offered to support with implementation of the charter. Number 10 officials emphasised the importance of agreeing a charter with substantial actions.

Communications campaign

Home Office officials shared the plan for the campaign. It was welcomed by members, and there was recognition of the need to unify comms into a central, simplified message.

Victim Support and National Trading Standards (NTS) highlighted the importance of making the campaign relatable and both offered to share insights from a victim perspective.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) and UK Finance also shared their keenness to support the campaign. Points were noted about ensuring the campaign fits in with wider messaging and the wider PROTECT approach.

The Welsh Government offered support and the Security Minister stated the importance of ensuring we speak with one single voice across the UK on this.
