J.B. Shropshire & Sons Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is to vary licence serial number AN/033/0046/007 which authorises abstraction of water from the Little Ouse River, Redmere, Ely, Cambridgeshire at National Grid Reference TL 65163 86840.

The licence authorises abstraction of water as follows:

  • 620 cubic metres an hour
  • 12,400 cubic metres a day
  • 450,000 cubic metres a year
  • between 01 November and 31 March inclusive in each year.

The water is currently used for the purpose of filling a reservoir for subsequent spray irrigation or filling a reservoir for subsequent discharge to various drains in Burnt Fen Internal Drainage Board for re-abstraction for spray irrigation.

The variation applied for is:

  • to add the purposes of filling a reservoir for subsequent trickle irrigation and filling a reservoir for subsequent discharge to drains for re-abstraction for trickle irrigation, and
  • to extend the area of land where re-abstraction takes place, to include all drains within the boundary of the Mildenhall Internal Drainage Board between the following National Grid References TL 62089 80567; TL 67256 75382; TL 72025 77615 and TL 71854 81004.

There is no additional water applied for under this variation as the current quantities will be aggregated between the existing and new purposes. All discharge and re-abstraction will be subject to simultaneous compensation discharge conditions as per the current licence.
