International roundtable on advancing quantum technologies, 9-10 November 2022

Published 2 December 2022

The UK, led by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, hosted a roundtable on international cooperation in quantum technology, inviting delegates from 12 countries to discuss international collaboration in the quantum sector at this second meeting in the series.

Delegates from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States were invited to London to discuss how we can better work together to advance the science and grow the global quantum ecosystem.

Note of meeting

Quantum physics studies the science of light and matter at the atomic or subatomic levels. Quantum technology exploits this science to engineer complex, multi-component systems with dramatically enhanced functionality and performance. The markets for quantum computers and networks, quantum-enabled sensors, cameras and communications systems are close and are already attracting investment from industry, potentially revolutionising industries as diverse as telecommunications and construction.

The roundtable centred on the themes of facilitating open research and creating a thriving global quantum ecosystem. Discussions were focused on enabling interactions within the international community, promoting international collaboration through joint projects and researcher exchanges, and effectively communicating the societal benefits that quantum technology will offer through use cases . The group also highlighted the importance of sharing best practice with regard to growing quantum capabilities and creating a pro-innovation regulatory approach.

As part of our shared commitment to international collaboration for the advancement of quantum technologies, all 12 countries have joined the Entanglement Exchange, a portal for exchange opportunities in quantum technology with like-minded nations. Opportunities for international students to work abroad are listed on the exchange website, which links to information from each participating nation.

The meeting preceded the annual UK National Quantum Technologies Showcase at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre on 11 November 2022.

UK delegates included representatives from the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme, which brings together academia, industry and government to accelerate the translation of quantum technologies into the UK marketplace.
