The franchise agreement dated 9 December 2014 between the Secretary of State for Transport, InterCity Railways Limited and East Coast Main Line Company Limited terminated on 24 June 2018.

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) took over the running of the East Coast Mainline services from 24 June 2018. A direct award (services agreement) was entered into between the Secretary of State for Transport, DfT OLR Holdings Limited and London Northern East Railway Limited dated 24 June 2018. The contract with DfT OLR Holdings Limited and London Northern East Railway Limited was announced by the Transport Minister on 16 May 2018. This agreement replaces the East Coast Franchise 2014 franchise agreement.
