These guides aim to help managers provide effective induction for short break carers in residential, community or home settings.
These induction guides and workbook are designed to help managers train staff to meet the training, support and development standards for short break carers of children and young people with disabilities or complex health needs.
Completing the standards is a requirement for all short break carers who are approved under the Fostering Services Regulations 2011, and may also be used with other new and existing short break carers as part of their training and development.
Using these training guides will help to achieve consistent levels of skills and knowledge among short break carers.
The standards set out clearly what short break carers should know, understand and be able to do in their roles, and they have a specific focus on disability and complex health needs. They help to ensure that short break carers are safe to take on the appropriate level of responsibility for the disabled children and young people in their care. They will assist supervisors and managers in assessing the skills, knowledge and experience of short break carers, and in identifying their training and development needs.
