Details of the application

Imerys Minerals Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a full licence to abstract water from underground strata at Povington Pit, Steeple, near Wareham at National Grid Reference SY 89426 82780, to transfer it to two unnamed streams at National Grid References SY 89510 82860 and SY 89280 82870, without intervening use. Discharge of the water to the streams is already authorised through an existing Permit to Discharge. The abstraction however is not, but a change in legislation means that this previously exempt activity needs now to be regulated through an abstraction licence in a process called New Authorisations (NA). A separate application for historic levels of abstraction to be considered has been made in accordance with the NA process, but this application relates to quantities in excess of those taken historically.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 170 cubic metres an hour
  • 4,080 cubic metres a day
  • 86,400 cubic metres a year
  • At an instantaneous rate not exceeding 80.6 litres per second.
  • between 1 April and 31 March inclusive in each year.

This is an existing operation where abstraction for the purpose of dewatering at the ball clay site under the licensing exemption has been undertaken since 1999. This application then seeks to permit an increase in dewatering capacity at the site above historic abstraction rates by the quantities shown above. A Transfer Licence will be required for this additional amount.
