An application has been made to the Environment Agency by Hydrosense Renewables Limited. The Environment Agency are required to give notice of this application.

The application is for a full licence to abstract water from the River Derwent at Kirkham, National Grid Reference (NGR) SE 73498 65713.

The proposal is to abstract water at the following rates and periods:

  • 7,000 litres per second
  • 25,200 cubic metres an hour
  • 604,800 cubic metres a day
  • 199,584,000 cubic metres a year

The water will be used for hydropower. Further details are:

  • the proposal includes an Archimedes screw turbine and a Larinier fish pass both located in a new channel
  • arrangements for eel and lamprey passage at the site are also included
  • abstracted water will be returned to the river approximately 110 metres downstream of the new channel intake
  • the flows quoted above are for the turbine only, appropriate flows for the fish pass are to be agreed as a requirement of any licence issued
