We have received a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 for the following:

The following data given annually for each of the last five years for which information is available. The actual spend (not allocated budget) by your department on:

i) Animal experiments
ii) Research intended to replace the use of animals in experiments

Part (i) should include all procedures involving a living animal as licensed under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, whether conducted in a government laboratory or elsewhere.

Part (ii) should include all research (whether in a government laboratory or elsewhere) whose aim it is to develop, validate or apply techniques to replace animals in research, testing and any other area where animals are used in scientific procedures (as defined above). This figure should not include spending on non-animal research which does not have the aim of replacing procedures on animals.’
