Hills Quarry Products Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a full licence to abstract water from an excavation in the Thames Gravel Aquifer located at Cerney Wick Farm, near Cerney Wick, Gloucestershire and represented by the boundary formed between National Grid References (NGRs) SU 07609 95513, SU 07938 95608, SU 08467 95068, SU 08210 94809, SU 07377 94853 and SU 07230 94991.

Water will be transferred to a trench dug into the Thames Gravel Aquifer, also located at Cerney Wick Farm Quarry and represented by the reach formed between NGRs SU 07453 95295, SU 08210 94809 and SU 08490 95056 without intervening use.

The proposal is to abstract all year and at the following rates:

  • 400 cubic metres an hour
  • 4,700 cubic metres a day
  • 1,250,000 cubic metres a year

Water will subsequently be transferred from the trench to the River Churn at NGR SU 08490 95056 without intervening use, all year and at a rate of 1,200 cubic metres per day.

The transfer of water is for the purpose of dewatering to facilitate sand and gravel extraction.
