Details of the application

H.H. & D.E. Drew Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a licence to abstract water from the sands and gravels aquifer within the abstraction area at Hurn Court Farm Quarry. The area of abstraction is within National Grid References: SZ 11258 97357, SZ 11815 97258, SZ 11644 96916 and SZ 11184 97068. Water is abstracted from this area without intervening use for the purpose of dewatering of the quarry. The water is then transferred first into a lagoon, and then discharged via a gravity pipeline to the existing ditch network at National Grid Reference SZ 11270 97095, before ultimately draining to the Southern Stream.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 41.4 cubic metres an hour
  • 993.6 cubic metres a day
  • 363,658 cubic metres a year
  • between 1 April and 31 March inclusive in each year.

Extraction of minerals is already taking place at this site above peak groundwater levels. The applicant proposes to now increase the working depth of the quarry below groundwater levels, hence the requirement for dewatering of the aquifer.
