Details of the applications

Hertfordshire County Council has applied to the Environment Agency for two licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of these applications in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The applications are for licences to obstruct or impede the flow of the Albury Tributary at National Grid Reference (NGR): TL 43840 23273 and the River Ash at NGR: TL 44781 23390 at Little Hadham, Ware, Hertfordshire.

Water will be obstructed or impeded to provide two flood storage areas for the protection of Little Hadham, as part of the A120 Little Hadham Bypass scheme.

Further details are: the Albury Tributary dam will be constructed as part of the road embankment and will be 241 metres long with a culvert through it, controlled by an orifice plate. It will have a flood storage capacity of 11,700 cubic metres of water and will allow a maximum design flow of 373 litres per second to pass through it. Both Albury Tributaries at the point of impoundment will be permanently diverted to form a single watercourse through the culvert. The River Ash dam will be constructed as part of the road embankment and will be 556 metres long with a culvert through it, controlled by an orifice plate. It will have a flood storage capacity of 432,500 cubic metres of water and will allow a maximum design flow of 4,970 litres per second to pass through it. Both impoundments will provide flood protection for up to 1 in 200 year events.
