Hallidays Hydropower Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the River Aire (Castleford Weir) at Castleford, National Grid Reference (NGR) SE 42791 26001.

Modifications to the existing weir are proposed such that water will be impeded by means of an adjustable weir for the purpose of hydropower (generation of electricity).

The scheme proposes installation of; two Archimedes screw turbines with a generation capacity of 430kW, an inflatable bladder weir crest 40m in length to raise the crest by 120mm and repair to the damaged weir crest, two new v-notches, a new eel pass, downstream gravel beds. The maximum flow through the turbines is 28 cubic metres per second, all water will be discharged back to the River Aire at NGR SE 42815 26016.
