HIV-PrEP activity coding guidance: Appendix 1 flowchart text description

This is the text description of the Appendix 1 flowchart in the HIV-PrEP activity coding guidance.

GUMCAD PrEP data item coding: Does the person belong to one of the following PrEP eligibility categories?

1. PrEP_Eligibility: MSM or trans woman

HIV negative MSM and transgender women who are identified as being at elevated risk of HIV acquisition through condomless anal sex in the previous 6 months and ongoing condomless anal sex.

If yes, then go to question 1.

If no, then continue to Eligibility 2.

2. PrEP_Eligibility: HIV positive partner

HIV negative people having condomless sex with partners who are living with HIV, unless the partner has been on antiretroviral therapy for at least 6 months and their plasma viral load is <200 copies per ml.

If yes, then go to question 1.

If no, then continue to Eligibility 3.

3. PrEP_Eligibility: Other high risk

Other HIV negative individuals with current risk factors other than those listed above that may put them at increased risk of HIV acquisition.

If yes, then go to question 1.

If no, then continue to Eligibility 4.

4. PrEP_Eligibility: Not applicable

HIV negative individuals who are assessed as not eligible for PrEP (no further coding).

Is the person obtaining PrEP from another source anyway?

If yes, then go to question 1.

Question 1: Is the person already taking PrEP?

If yes, then go to question 2.

If no, then go to question 4.

Question 2: Is the person taking PrEP from this clinic?

If yes, PrEP offer and use:

  • PrEP_Uptake: Accepted
  • PrEP_Regimen: Daily or event based

Then go to Question 5.

If no, then go to Question 3.

Question 3: Is the person taking PrEP from another source (not this clinic)?

If yes, PrEP offer and use:

  • PrEP_Uptake: Obtained elsewhere
  • PrEP_Regimen: Daily or event based

Then no further coding required.

If no, PrEP offer and use:

PrEP_Stop_Reason for:

  • adverse event
  • HIV acquisition
  • patient choice
  • no longer eligible
  • other

Then no further coding required.

Question 4: Does the person accept the new offer of PrEP?

If yes, PrEP offer and use:

  • PrEP_Uptake: Accepted
  • PrEP_Regimen: Daily or event based

Then go to Question 5.

If no, PrEP offer and use:

  • PrEP_Uptake: Declined

Then no further coding required.

Question 5: Is PrEP prescribed today?

If yes, then PrEP_Prescription for:

  • 30 tablets
  • 60 tablets
  • 90 tablets
  • 180 tablets
  • other amount

Then no further coding required.

If no, then no further coding required.
