The Groundwater Regulations 1998, which became fully active on 1 April 1999, respond to the requirements of the EC Directive on the Protection of Groundwater against Certain Dangerous Substances (80/68/EEC). The Regulations require that activities are controlled to prevent the entry of List I substances into groundwater, and to minimise the entry of List II substances in order to prevent pollution of the receiving groundwater.
