Getting a refund from SLC

Use this form to ask the Student Loans Company for a refund of repayments you made in previous tax years. You can request a refund if your income for the whole tax year was below the annual repayment threshold.

Details

You can only ask for a refund for tax years that have ended. This is because we can only check if a refund is available after confirming your annual income with HMRC. This will not happen until after the end of the tax year.

Remember if we refund you, the amount you get will be added back onto your total balance.

Refunds for the tax year 2023-24

You do not need to do anything now. We’ll get your income information from HMRC later this year. When we do, we’ll check what you’ve paid and get in touch if a refund is available.

Asking for a refund for any other previous tax year

You can check the previous annual repayment threshold for any year you think you might have a refund available.

To ask for a refund, complete all sections of the refund request form - you may need a PDF reader, like Adobe Reader. Check your answers are saved and when you’re ready to send it:

  • email the completed form to us at below_threshold_refunds@slc.co.uk
  • we’ll send a reply to let you know we’ve got it
  • you only need to complete one form. We’ll check for available refunds in all the years you made repayments
  • it can take up to 28 days to check your refund request  - we’ll contact you if we need anything else from you

Do not send bank details in your email. You can check and change your bank details through your account.

Do not send other questions your student loan account in your email. We will not be able to respond to them.

Refunds for other reasons

Only use this form to ask for a refund of repayments you made when your income was below an annual repayment threshold. There are different ways to ask for other types of refunds.
