Gender Recognition Certificate: applications and outcomes

Published 29 June 2022

1. Main facts and figures

The data shows that, in the financial year 2020 to 2021:

  • 95.6% of all decisions made on Gender Recognition Certificate applications led to a full or interim certificate being awarded
  • 1.8% of all decisions led to an application being refused

2. What the data measures

The data shows the number of Gender Recognition Certificate applications received in the 16 financial years between April 2005 and March 2021. It also shows the number of decisions made (‘disposals’) in each of those years.

The data shows the percentage of applications that were:

  • successful – applicants were given either a full or interim certificate
  • refused
  • withdrawn, not paid for, or not considered because they contained errors (labelled as ‘other’ in the table)

Percentages are rounded to 1 decimal point.
