Published 27 March 2024

Applies to England

The further education funding simplification pilot will open at the start of the 2024 to 2025 academic year.

These colleges will take part in it:

  • Basingstoke College of Technology
  • The Bedford College Group
  • Bridgwater and Taunton College
  • Exeter College
  • Loughborough College
  • Middlesbrough College
  • Sunderland College (Part of Education Partnership North East)
  • TEC Partnership

What the pilot involves

The pilot will test ways of simplifying funding, audit and reporting.

The Department for Education will:

  • reduce funding rules
  • give colleges more flexibility over funding rules and some ringfences
  • allow colleges to provide Skills Bootcamps without bidding for funding through procurement
  • make adult skills funding more predictable
  • simplify how we audit and assure further education funding
  • simplify data processing
  • aim to simplify processes for apprenticeships
  • use the pilot to judge whether to make the changes more widely

Colleges may be able to get more Skills Bootcamps funding if they already have Skills Bootcamps contracts.
