FOI release 26841

The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) is the professional body for chief officers, who hold a substantive rank or appointment at the rank of Assistant Chief Constable level (Commander in the Metropolitan Police Service and City of London Police) or above as well as senior police staff equivalents. Each member is a serving officer or member of police staff and therefore paid a salary by a force in England and Wales.

National policing practice and guidance is developed under the leadership of a chief officer through business areas, now part of the College of Policing. The business area leads now form the core of the College of Policing professional committee. The chief officers leading business areas bring together experience and expertise at all ranks and grades across the service to advise on policing practice. Each chief officer takes on this role as well as being a serving officer in England and Wales.

The Home Office provided funding for ACPO HQ in 2012 to 2013. This funding was £562,000 and was to support the transfer of the role of ACPO business areas in developing national standards and police practice to the College of Policing. Following the transfer, the business area leads will continue to work co-operatively with both the College of Policing and with chief constables’ council in the interests of the police and the public. The Home Office will no longer provide grant-in-aid funding to ACPO headquarters.
