First class rail travel: number of journeys taken
Published 24 September 2012
Q. How many first class rail journeys have been taken (not cost but actual number of journeys) by the Secretary of State forWalesand the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Wales since May 2010.
A: We have conducted a search of our paper and electronic records and we hold information relevant to your request, which is given in the table below.
Minister | Number of journeys between May 2010 and June 2012 |
---|---|
Secretary of State | 10 |
Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State | 0 |
As background, the journeys shown in the table above account for 5% of the rail travel undertaken by ministers during the period. Since May 2010 the Wales Office has had a strict policy that requires all rail travel, including for ministers, to be in standard class unless exceptional business reasons justify first class travel in order to ensure the effective conduct of Government business. This has generated savings of more than £92,000 during the 2011-12 financial year compared to the cost of rail travel during 2009-10.
