The winning entrants to the FCDO Next Generation Economics competition take a tour of King Charles Street and meet the FCDO Chief Economist.

Arjun Javagal, student at St Olave’s Grammar School, has been named the winner of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) Next Generation Economics 2023 competition.

Arjun’s essay argued for the use of Payment for Ecosystem Services and Cap-and-Trade mechanisms to reduce biodiversity loss, utilising economic analysis and range of evidence to produce a creative and well-argued essay.

Two competition runners up have also been announced: Siddharth Sridhar and Moradeke Akisanya

Arjun, Siddharth and Moradeke, along with 4 other students who made the final shortlist, visited the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office in September 2023. They met Professor Adnan Khan, FCDO Chief Economist, to discuss their essays and learn more about being an economist in government, networking with a range of economists across the department. They also received a tour of the historic FCDO building.

The students also visited the London School of Economics to talk with researchers at the Hub for Equal Representation (H.E.R) who have collaborated on this year’s competition.

The competition invited UK school students to write a letter to the FCDO Chief Economist on the biggest economic challenges facing their generation.

The Next Generation Economics competition will return for the 2023 to 2024 academic year.
