This letter is a response to a Freedom of Information request about external legal services used by DfT. The initial request asked for

  • details of all external legal advice (i.e. from non-Treasury solicitors) which the department sought in 2012
  • information about how much the services cost
  • the reasons for seeking advice
  • details of each legal service provider

The response letter features a link to published data about monthly spending over £500 which features details of the amounts paid, the type of expense and the recipient of the payment. It also explains that DfT refuses to provide some of the information requested on the basis that it could only be obtained at costs in excess of £600.
