The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has funded and completed research related to the experiences of Hong Kongers, including BN(O)s, living in the UK.
The research was conducted in order to help the government understand how best to support and respond to the Hong Konger, including BN(O), community in a sensitive and culturally informed manner; as well as to inform the continued delivery of the Welcome Programme available to holders of the British National (Overseas) visa. 50 individual, in-depth interviews were conducted, participants included adult Hong Kongers from a variety of backgrounds, including those on a BN(O) visa (main applicants and dependents). Interviews took place in between December 2023 and January 2024.
Interviews covered the topics of Hong Kongers experiences with integration, safety, English language, accessing employment, accessing housing, accessing healthcare and interactions with government (including interactions with the Welcome Programme) since moving to the UK.
The report outlines recommendations to government as a result of its findings. The recommendations highlight government actions which would beneficial to the Hong Kong community in the UK, particularly those settling or arriving imminently.
