This report evaluates UK participation in Horizon 2020 programme. Horizon 2020 (H2020) was the EU’s research and innovation funding programme which ran from 2014-2020 with a budget of nearly €80 billion. Through this programme, businesses and universities across Europe (including the UK) were able to apply for funding for research and innovation activities.

The study set out the following objectives to understand:

  • UK participation in H2020 including who received funding and the value of this funding
  • how the UK benefited from our participation in H2020
  • why people did or didn’t apply for funding by looking at:

    • why applicants choose to apply
    • how government strategies and support services affect participation
    • wider factors such as the impact of the EU referendum
