Published 8 April 2014

FOI release 29899.

The estimated number of migrants with valid leave greater than 3 months on 27th March 2011 was 1,671,000, of which 1,002,000 were issued out of country and 669,000 in country.

Note:

  • The figures are based on entry clearance visas data and (in country) extensions of stay data and do not include those granted other forms of temporary leave to remain in the UK such as refugee status, humanitarian protection or discretionary leave.

  • The figures do not include people who may be visiting (including student visitors) or who are in transit in the UK on 27th March 2011.

  • Not all those granted visa will have ever entered the UK and some will have left the UK before the expiry date of the visa or in-country extension.

  • Those granted multiple visas that were valid as of 27th March 2011 will be double counted.

  • The figures do not include individuals who have applied for an extension and are waiting a decision or who are awaiting appeal outcomes. They do not include migrants who were refused an extension but have raised an appeal. They do not include migrants who were granted settlement and have not naturalised. They do not include migrants who were granted citizenship.

  • The figures were drawn from the same data sources as for the Migrant Journey analysis. Details on how these data were created are described in the methods section of the first Migrant Journey publication. Records were examined to determine which migrants had leave granted from or before 27th March 2011 with leave expiry on or after 27th March 2011. Any migrants who had been granted leave for the purposes of visit or with a duration of less than 3 months were excluded.
