Applies to England

Essex Wildlife Trust has applied to the Environment Agency for 2 licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of these applications (in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The first application is for a licence to impede the flow of the River Chelmer at National Grid Reference (NGR) TL 71202 11944 by installing a side-spill weir which will divert a proportion of flow from the main river when it reaches a level above 29.75 metres above Ordnance Datum.

Essex Wildlife Trust has also applied for a licence to abstract water from the River Chelmer at the side-spill weir mentioned above and transfer it to a backwater ditch at NGR TL 71202 11944 all year without intervening use. In an average year this will enable up to 2,000,000 cubic metres of water to be transferred each year at high flows, diverting it through the backwater ditch to create wetland habitat. This will provide a high flow refuge for fish and invertebrates and reduce diffuse pollution and silt from entering the River Chelmer. The water will be returned to the River Chelmer at National Grid Reference TL 71268 11230.
