Details of the application

The Environment Agency has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The applications will cover the replacement of Godstow Weir B, River Thames, near Wolvercote, Oxfordshire. The first application is for a licence to remove the existing impounding works at National Grid Reference (NGR) SP 48410 09250, and the second application is for a new impoundment licence for a replacement weir structure 2 metres downstream at NGR SP 48419 09249.

The proposal lies within the Thames Corridor Abstraction Licencing Strategy Area and within the Thames catchment. The project aims to replace the existing weir to prevent further deterioration and failure. Failure of the weir would cause loss of navigation, potential flooding and loss of ability to manage flood flows. The new structure will incorporate a fish and eel pass, improving fish migration, and a new access walkway. The height of the replacement structure will be similar to the previous structure with no change to the crest levels or water storage and so it will not significantly affect flows or levels.
