Details of the applications

The Environment Agency are applying to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for two licences to impound water.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application, in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The applications are to impound water in the Eller Beck and the Waller Hill Beck (also known as Skibenden Beck) near Skipton, North Yorkshire at National Grid References SD 99389 52972 and SE 00920 52274. Both impoundments are designed to hold back water in a 1 in 100 year flood event.

The Eller Beck impoundment includes an earth embankment not exceeding 143.4 metres above ordnance datum in height complete with flood spillway and a culvert with a penstock. Flows will be unrestricted to pass downstream of the Eller Beck impoundment in normal (non-flood) conditions. The flood storage area (reservoir) resulting from the impounding works shall be used only for temporary storage of flood water with a total capacity of 433,205 cubic metres.

The Waller Hill Beck impoundment includes an earth embankment not exceeding 149.6 metres above ordnance datum in height complete with flood spillway and a culvert with an orifice plate. Flows will be restricted to 1.5 cubic metres per second downstream of the Waller Hill Beck impoundment. The flood storage area (reservoir) resulting from the impounding works shall be used only for temporary storage of flood water with a total capacity of 72,465 cubic metres.
