Environment Agency has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application (in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a licence to impound the Stanford Brook at Clay’s Lake, Crawley at National Grid Reference TQ 28883 32706 for the purpose of storing flood water. The new impoundment will enable the storage of a greater volume of flood water in Clay’s Lake to provide an enhanced level of flood protection to properties and businesses downstream, including Gatwick Airport.

Further details of the proposal are:

  • the existing dam at Clay’s Lake will be replaced with a new, larger structure in the same location
  • the new dam will be 170 metres in length with a maximum width of 90 metres
  • the proposed new dam has been designed to hold a maximum volume of 350,000 cubic metres of water at times of flood, compared to the 23,999 cubic metres of water which can currently be stored in flood conditions
  • the proposed works will impound, and control a managed release of water levels up to and including a 1 in 1,000 year flood event
  • the dam will provide a minimum downstream residual flow of 0.3 cubic metres per second in order to protect low flows in the Stanford Brook
  • the dam structure will include a fish and eel pass
