Details of the application

The Environment Agency is applying to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The application is to construct two new impoundments at National Grid Reference(NGR) TF 31345 87019 (northern scheme) and NGR TF 31513 85826 (southern scheme) for the Environment Agency Flood Alleviation Scheme for Louth.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application, in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

Further details of the proposal are: the works will include the construction of an earth and concrete embankment at each site not exceeding 36.756 metres Above Ordnance Datum (AOD) in height for the northern scheme and 40.926 metres AOD in height for the southern scheme, complete with culverts and flow control structures.

The northern scheme is designed to hold back 87,000 cubic metres of water and the southern scheme is designed to hold back 25,000 cubic metres of water.

The schemes will impound the water to enable the control of flow along the River Lud and the Hallington Beck to reduce the risk of flooding in the nearby town of Louth. The structures will allow the natural flow in the watercourses at all times, and only hold back water during flood high flows to reduce the risk of flooding. The flow will be controlled by way of Hydroslide tilting sluice gates which will operate automatically as the levels in the watercourses rise.
