An application has been made to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs by Environment Agency. The Environment Agency are required to give notice of this application.

The application is for for a licence to abstract water from the River Exe close to Trews Side Weir, Exeter at National Grid Reference (NGR) SX 92298 91729 for the purpose of transferring it without intervening use to Trews Flood Relief Channel (FRC).

The proposal is to abstract water at the following rates and periods:

  • 1,908 cubic metres per hour
  • 45,792 cubic metres per day
  • 5,676,480 cubic metres per year

This transfer is to support wetland habitats created in the FRC as part of the Exeter Flood Defence Scheme works and provide water for fish passage. The water will be abstracted through a new fish pass located at the point of abstraction with all water being returned to the River Exe approximately 1.3 kilometres downstream.

An application is also being made for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the River Exe at Trews Weir, Exeter, NGR SX 92409 91601.

The object of impounding water is to construct a new fish pass to facilitate fish passage over the weir.

An application is also being made for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the River Exe at Trews Side Weir, Exeter, NGR SX 92347 91643.

The object of impounding water by means of the works is to modify the existing side weir to lower it by 250 millimetres thereby allowing more flood water to be diverted out of the River Exe during flood flows.

After expiry of the period for representations, the Environment Agency will be entitled to the grant of a licence which authorises the proposal which shall deemed to be granted, unless the Secretary of State, either in consequence of any representations made with respect to the proposal or otherwise, directs or requires an application to be made to him.
