The Environment Agency is applying to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of these applications, in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.
The applications are to formally vary eight full abstraction licences which form the West Berkshire Groundwater Scheme. The scheme authorises abstraction from the Chalk and Upper Greensand aquifers to discharge to surface watercourses to maintain flow in the River Thames during drought conditions. The variations will reduce the authorised daily quantities on some licences, add expiry dates, add purposes, improve the accuracy of conditions and enact amendments recommended under the Habitats Directive.
