1. Information: academy accounting officer letter

Peter Lauener, chief executive of the Education Funding Agency has written a letter to all accounting officers of academy trusts. The letter reflects on the accounting officer’s key responsibilities and highlights some important financial management and governance issues.

Please share it with your chair, trustees and senior leadership team.

2. Information: academy fraud awareness guidance

We have published a guide about reducing the risk of fraud and how to report it to EFA for academy trusts.

3. Action: insurance top-up funding

Academies wishing to claim top-up funding for their insurance payments can use the form on GOV.UK for the academic years 2014 to 2015 and 2015 to 2016. Academies have the option to claim for additional funding for 2014 to 2015 until the end of October.

From 1 November, trusts will be able to claim for top-up costs covering the academic years 2015 to 2016 and 2016 to 2017 using the same form.

4. Action: autumn school census

Colleagues are reminded that the autumn school census 2016 commences today, Thursday 6 October 2016. The deadline for approved submissions is Wednesday 2 November. The database will close to schools and local authorities on Wednesday 30 November.

To help you make your submissions are accurate the Department for Education has produced a series of schools census training videos intended to provide background to the census and funding implications of the autumn census.
