DS Smith Paper Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is to vary licence serial number 9/40/02/0021/GR which authorises the abstraction of water from strata composed of chalk at Swale in the county of Kent.

The variation applied for is: to add to the licence 4 new boreholes at National Grid References TQ 91963 66135, TQ 91681 66082, TQ 91476 66193, and TQ 91575 66764; remove two closed and sealed boreholes at National Grid Reference TQ 895 644 from the licence; and reduce the licenced abstraction rates from:

  • 1,954.8 cubic metres a hour
  • 45,096.3 cubic metres a day
  • 14,102,547 cubic metres a year

to:

  • 1,458 cubic metres a hour
  • 35,000 cubic metres a day
  • 12,775,000 cubic metres a year

The abstraction falls within the North Kent and Swale Abstraction Licencing Strategy area.

Further details are: 28,000 cubic metres, approximately 71.4% of the abstracted water is returned to the environment by consent to discharge to The Swale daily at National Grid Reference TQ 92218 67064.
