Door supervision and security guarding licences: 2019 to 2022

Published 17 May 2023

1. Request

I am currently looking at the impact of Covid and the introduction of the upskilling to the security industry as a whole. I am after some figures to assist me. I would like the following:

  • number of licences held by door supervisors and security guards at the end of 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022
  • the number of those who downskilled their licences from door supervision to security guarding

2. Response

I can confirm that the SIA does hold this information.

2.1 Number of licence holders

Each month, the SIA posts statistics on licence holders by demographic. You can view this here: SIA licence holders.

Figures for the number of door supervision licences held in January 2019, 2020 and 2021 are published in appendix 1 of this document: Sector profile: recruitment and retention in the door supervision sector.

Figures for the number of security guarding licences held in August 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 are published in appendix 1 of this document: Sector profile: recruitment and retention in the security guarding sector.

2.2 Licence switching

Since October 2021, of the 40,107 door supervision licence holders who renewed their licence on time, 3,739 (9%) chose to switch licence sector from door supervision to security guarding.

Please note that the above figures relate to the number of licence holders choosing to switch licence sector from door supervision to security guarding following the SIA offering this option upon the introduction of top-up training for door supervision and security guarding licence renewals in October 2021.

Please also note that some licence holders may have applied for multiple sectors at the same time. As long the security guarding sector was selected for the renewal of their licence, and the licence was granted we consider it as ‘downskilling’.
