D&T Sector Statistics - Innovation Statistics

Details

This release provides statistics on the following innovation metrics for the UK Digital and Technologies (D&T) sector:

  • Value of IUK funding awarded to D&T companies and number of awards
  • Number of IPO patents granted to D&T companies
  • Distribution and intensity of patenting activity, measured by:
    • Share of companies granted at least 1 IPO patent; and
    • Average number of IPO patents per company
  • Number and share of active UK university spinouts in the D&T sector

These statistics are based on a company‑level definition of the D&T sector, rather than Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes. For more detail on the D&T company list please visit: Digital and Technologies Sector Statistics – Sector Definition.

The D&T sector is defined as a combination of the frontier technologies and a digital component. The definition for the digital component is different to the Digital sector definition used in the Digital Sector Economic Estimates series.

Frontier technologies comprise 6 priority technology areas identified in the Digital and Technologies Sector Plan within the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy:

  • Advanced Connectivity Technologies
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Cyber Security
  • Engineering Biology
  • Quantum Technologies
  • Semiconductors

Further detail on the definition and construction of the company lists is provided in the accompanying technical report and definitions page of this collection.

In this publication, we provide statistics for the D&T sector and for frontier technologies as a whole. We do not present statistics for individual frontier technologies or for a “digital” component. Due to overlaps between the underlying company lists, the digital component cannot be derived by subtracting frontier technologies from the overall D&T sector. Statistics on individual frontier technologies are available in DSIT sector studies linked on the definitions page of this release.
