The Digital and Technologies Sector Statistics: Volume 1 release provides statistics on the contribution of the Digital and Technologies (D&T) sector to the UK economy. This is based on a new, company‑level definition of the sector, which provides a more accurate picture of the sector’s scale and performance than Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes. This release is broken down into the following sections:

D&T Definitions:

  • The methodology used to produce the new company-level definition
  • A SIC‑based proxy (supplementary), which provides a practical approximation where company‑level identifiers cannot be used

Economic Statistics:

  • Company Count
  • Productivity
  • Employment
  • Turnover
  • GVA (gross value added)
  • Wages

Innovation Statistics:

  • Value of Innovate UK funding awarded to D&T companies and number of awards 

  • Number of patents granted to D&T companies  

  • Share of companies granted at least 1 patent

  • Average number of patents per company 

  • Number and share of active UK university spinouts in the D&T sector

Financial Statistics:

  • Value of fundraising raised by non-publicly listed D&T companies

  • Number of fundraising deals completed by non-publicly listed D&T companies
