Member appointments to the Human Tissue Authority (HTA)

Dr Stuart Dollow, Professor Penney Lewis, Professor Dame Sally Macintyre, The Rt Revd Graham Usher and Mrs Lorna Williamson have been appointed as members of the HTA for 3 years from 1 April 2016, with the exception of Dame Sally who will start on 5 May 2016.

The appointments will involve a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per month. Remuneration for the roles will be at a rate of £7,883 per annum.

These appointments are made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. The appointments are made on merit and political activity played no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. None have declared any political activity or hold any other ministerial public appointments.

Member appointment to the Independent Reconfiguration Panel

Dr Stephen D’Souza has been appointed as a member of the Independent Reconfiguration Panel for 3 years from 1 May 2016.

The appointment will involve a time commitment of 1 to 2 days per month. Remuneration for the role will be at a rate of £140 per day plus travel and subsistence expenses.

This appointment is made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. The appointment was made on merit and political activity played no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Dr D’Souza has not declared any political activity.

Chair appointment to the Advisory Committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues and Organs (SaBTO)

Professor James Neuberger has been appointed as chair for 3 years from 18 April 2016. As chair the time commitment will be for up to 10 days per year. There is no remuneration for this post and expenses will be paid in line with Department of Health policy.

Commissioner appointments to the Commission on Human Medicines (CHM)

Helen Ward and Martin Wilson have been appointed as commissioners to the Commission on Human Medicines for 4 years from 28 March 2016.

Appointments will continue to involve a time commitment of approximately 22 days per year, including 11 meetings. Remuneration for the role will continue to be up to £325 for the preparation required and their attendance at each CHM meeting.

These appointments are made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. The appointments are made on merit and political activity played no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Neither have declared any political activity or hold any other ministerial public appointments.

Chair appointment to the Food Standards Agency

Heather Hancock has been appointed as the chair of the Food Standards Agency (FSA) with effect from 1 April 2016 for 3 years.

The appointment involves a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per week and remuneration at a rate of £60,000 per annum.

This appointment is made in accordance with the Food Standards Act 1999 and the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Appointments are made on merit and political activity played no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Heather has confirmed she has no political affiliations and has never been politically active.

Independent member appointments to the Office for Strategic Coordination of Health Research (OSCHR)

Stuart Bell and Fiona Dalton have been appointed as independent members from 1 March 2016. Mr Bell’s appointment is for 4 years and Ms Dalton’s is for 3 years. The role will normally involve a time commitment of up to 5 days per year. There is no remuneration for these posts. However, expenses will be paid in line with Department of Health policy.

Members appointed to the Committee on the Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment (COMARE)

Dr David Sutton, Professor Paul Pharoah and Dr Peter Riley have been appointed as Members from 1 February 2016 for 3 years. Professor Richard Wakeford has been re-appointed as a member from 1 December 2015 for 2 years. The roles will involve a time commitment of up to 4 days per year.

Members appointed to the Advisory Board on the Registration of Homeopathic Products (ABRHP)

Dr Frank Mulder has been reappointed as Member from 29 February 2016 and Members, Mrs Patricia Donnachie and Dr Steve Bennett Britton have been reappointed from 1 April 2016. The reappointments are for 2 years. Members will continue to receive a fee of £325 per day and the time commitment will continue to be for up to 11 days per year.

Members appointed to the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI)

Professor Judith Breuer and Dr Elizabeth Wearmouth have been re-appointed as Members from 18 February 2016, and 29 February 2016 respectively, for 3 years. The roles will involve a time commitment of 6 to 8 days per year. There is no remuneration for these posts. However, expenses will be paid in line with Department of Health policy.

Non-executive director appointments to NHS England (NHSE)

Wendy Becker and Michelle Mitchell have been appointed as non-executive directors of NHSE for 4 years from 1 March 2016.

The appointments will involve a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per month. Remuneration for the roles will be at a rate of £7,883 per annum.

These appointments are made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. The appointments are made on merit and political activity played no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Neither Wendy Becker nor Michelle Mitchell have declared any political activity and do not hold any other ministerial appointments.

Chair and non-executive director appointments to the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT)

John Pattullo’s appointment as the chair of NHSBT has been extended for 12 months with effect from 1 June 2016.

His appointment will continue to involve a time commitment of 3 days per week. Remuneration for the role will continue to be at a rate of £63,000 per annum.

In addition, Charles St John and Professor Paresh Vyas have been appointed as non-executive directors of NHSBT for 3 years from 1 April 2016.

The appointments will involve a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per month. Remuneration for the roles will be at a rate of £7,883 per annum.

These appointments are made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. The appointments are made on merit and political activity played no part in the selection process. Chair reappointment to Health Education England (HEE)

Sir Keith Pearson has been reappointed as chair of HEE for a further 2 years from 28 June 2016.

The appointment will continue to involve a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per week and remuneration for the role is £55,000 per annum.

This appointment is made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. In accordance with the original Nolan recommendations there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Sir Keith has not declared any political activity and does not hold any other ministerial appointments.

Members appointments to the Advisory Committee on Borderline Substances (ACBS)

The following have been reappointed as members for 3 years from 22 October 2015:

Members appointments to the UK National Screening Committee

The following have been appointed as members from 1 November 2015 for 4 years:

Member appointments to the British Pharmacopoeia Commission

The following people have been appointed as members of the British Pharmacopoeia Commission with effect from 1 January 2016 for 4 years:

The work of Panels is generally by correspondence, with meetings in exceptional circumstances. Members will be able to claim a fee for preparation and attendance at meetings at a rate of £325 per meeting.

These appointments are made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Professor Monique Simmonds has within the last 5 years, held office, e.g. such as chair, treasurer, or secretary of a local branch of the Conservative Party. Professor Simmonds is also a member of the Science Advisory Board for the Forestry Commission.

Andrew Coulson is also a non-executive director, of the Veterinary Medicines Directorate, at the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs.

Appointments to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence

Dr Rosie Benneyworth has been appointed as a non-executive director of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) with effect from 1 January 2016 for 4 years.

The appointment will involve a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per month. Remuneration for the role will be at a rate of £7,883 per annum.

This appointment is made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Appointments are made on merit and political activity played no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Dr Benneyworth has not declared any political activity.

Appointments to the Independent Reconfiguration Panel

The chair of the Independent Reconfiguration Panel, Lord Bernard Ribeiro, has been re-appointed for a further 3 years with effect from 2 July 2016.

His appointment will continue to involve a time commitment of 2 days per week, including 6 meetings a year. Remuneration for the role will continue to be at a rate of £36,780 per annum.

In addition, Dr Nick Coleman has been re-appointed as a clinical member of the Independent Reconfiguration Panel for a further 2 years with effect from 1 May 2016.

His appointment will continue to involve a time commitment of 1 to 2 days per month. Remuneration for the role will continue to be at a rate of £140 per day plus travel and subsistence expenses.

These appointments are made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Appointments to NHS Improvement

Ed Smith, chair of Monitor and chair designate of the TDA, has been appointed as substantive chair of the TDA, from the 1 December 2015 following regulatory changes to allow this. His time commitment and remuneration will remain the same.

Peter Carr stood down as chair of the TDA on 30 November 2015. For the remainder of his term, until 31 May 2016, he will continue as a non-executive director and vice chair of the TDA. His remuneration will remain at the rate of £55,000 per annum for a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per week.

2 non-executive director appointments have also been made to the NHS Improvement board:

  • Sigurd Reinton has been re-appointed as a non-executive director of Monitor for a further 2 years with effect from 1 January 2016
  • Lord Patrick Carter has been appointed as a non-executive director of Monitor with effect from 11 December 2015, for 2 years

At this stage, both of these appointments are formal appointments to the Monitor board. The time commitment for these roles will be 2 to 3 days per month, and remuneration will be at a rate of £7,883 per annum.

The intention is for there to be a single NHS Improvement joint board, with all non-executive directors appointed to both Monitor and the TDA. However, this is subject to changes to the TDA Regulations and subsequent Parliamentary procedure, expected to come into force on 1 April 2016.

All these appointments have been made following consultation with the commissioner for public appointments. Appointments are made on merit and political activity played no part in the appointment process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Lord Carter is a Labour peer; Sigurd Reinton has not declared any political activity. Lord Carter is also Chair of the Property Advisory Panel and a member of the cross-government Efficiency and Reform Board.

Member appointment to the Administration of Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee (ARSAC)

Dr Daniel Levine has been appointed as a member of the Administration of Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee (ARSAC) from 1 February 2016 until 31 March 2019.

The time commitment is 2 committee meetings a year and approximately 1.5 hours per week. Members receive allowances for travel and subsistence incurred on ARSAC business, at rates set by ARSAC in line with current government policy.

This appointment is made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Appointments are made on merit and political activity played no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Dr Levine has not declared any political activity.

Chair appointment to the Care Quality Commission

Peter Wyman has been appointed as the new chair of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for 4 years with effect from the 4 January 2016.

His appointment will involve a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per week. Remuneration for the role will be at a rate of £63,000 per annum.

This appointment is made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Appointments are made on merit and political activity played no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Peter has not declared any political activity.

Peter is currently chairman of Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, but will be standing down from this position before taking up post as CQC Chair. He is also a Board Member and chair of the Audit Committee at Companies House.

Michael Mire’s appointment as interim chair of the CQC has been extended from the 9 December 2015 to the 3 January 2016 to allow time for the newly appointed chair, Peter Wyman to take up post. His time commitment and remuneration will remain the same during this period. Michael will then revert back to his role on the CQC Board as a non-Executive Director.

Mrs Ruth Wilde and Dr Anne Lampe have been appointed as members of the HFEA for 3 years from 1 January 2016 and 1 February 2016 respectively.

The appointments will involve a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per month. Remuneration for the roles will be at a rate of £7,883 per annum.

These appointments are made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Chair appointment to the National Oversight Group for High Secure Forensic Services (NOG)

Margaret Edwards has been appointed as Chair from 16 September 2015 for 3 years. The role will normally involve a time commitment of up to 15 days per year and will receive a fee of £800 per day. Expenses will be paid in line with NHS England policy.

Lay Members appointments to the Prescribed Specialised Services Advisory Group (PSSAG)

Steve McNeice and Manoj Mistry have been appointed as lay members from 1 October 2015 for 3 years. The roles will normally involve a time commitment of up to 4 days per year and as members will receive a fee of £150 per meeting. Expenses will be paid in line with Department of Health policy.

Chair and Member appointments to the Committee on the Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment (COMARE)

Dr Christopher Gibson has been appointed as chair from 1 November 2015 for 3 years. The role will normally involve a time commitment of up to 4 days per year and will receive a fee of £141.50 per meeting, with £28.50 per day reading fee. Expenses will be paid in line with Department of Health policy.

Professor Roger Taylor has been reappointed as a member from 1 December 2015 for 3 years. This role will continue to involve a time commitment of 3 days per year and receive a fee of £98.50 per meeting and an additional reading fee of £25 per meeting. Expenses will be paid in line with Department of Health policy.

Member appointments to the Administration of Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee (ARSAC)

The following people have been re-appointed as members of the Administration of Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee (ARSAC) from 3 November 2015 until 31 March 2019:

Chair and Deputy Chair appointments to the Food Standards Agency

Tim Bennett has been appointed as the substantive chair of the Food Standards Agency (FSA) until 31 March 2016. From 1 April 2016 he will remain on the Board as deputy chair, until 31 March 2017.

Heather Hancock will take up post as deputy chair from the 14 September 2015 until 31 March 2016. Heather is being put forward as the government’s preferred candidate for chair of the FSA from 1 April 2016, subject to a pre-appointment hearing with the Health Select Committee.

The chair role involves a time commitment of 2-3 days per week and is remunerated at a rate of £60,000 per annum.

The deputy chair role involves a time commitment of 6 days per month, with some additional days as required, and is remunerated at a daily rate of £299.22.

These appointments are made in accordance with the Food Standards Act 1999 and the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Appointments are made on merit and political activity played no part in the appointment process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Neither Tim nor Heather declared any political activity.

Member appointment to the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI)

Professor Maarten Postma has been appointed as member from 20 July 2015 for 3 years. There is no remuneration for this role and expenses will be paid in line with Department of Health policy. The time commitment will be for up to 8 days per year.

Member appointment to the Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens (ACDP)

Professor Thomas Evans, professor of Molecular Microbiology, University of Glasgow has been appointed as a member from 1 October 2015 for 3 years. There is no remuneration for this role and will normally involve a time commitment of up to 5 days per year. Expenses will be paid in line with Department of Health policy.

Chair appointment to the Advisory Committee on Resource Allocation (ACRA)

Professor Peter Smith has been appointed chair from 13 July 2015 for 4 years. The time commitment will be up to 10 days per year. There is no remuneration for this role and expenses will be paid in line with Department of Health policy.

Member appointments to the Committee on the Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment (COMARE)

Professor Stephanie McKeown, Dr Thomas Nunan and Dr Paul Darragh were reappointed as members from 1 June 2015 for 3 years.

Professor Kevin Prise, Dr Mireille Toledano and Dr Colin Martin have been appointed as members from 13 July 2015, Professor Prise and Dr Toledano for 3 years and Dr Martin for 2 years. Dr John Harrison has been appointed member from 1 November 2015 for 2 years.

Members will receive a meeting fee of £98.50 and a reading fee of £25 per meeting and expenses will be paid in line with Department of Health policy. The time commitment will be 4 days per year.

Member appointments to the Standing Commission on Carers (SCOC)

The terms of the following members of the Standing Commission on Carers have been extended from 7 September 2015 to 31 March 2016:

These appointments will continue to involve a time commitment of 4 quarterly meetings per year, plus occasional workshops, thematic policy days and participation in fact finding visits. Remuneration for the role will remain at a rate of £200 for preparation and attendance at meetings, and for other SCOC related events.

Appointment of Non-Executive Director of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence

Jonathan Tross’ appointment as a non-executive director of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), with responsibility for chairing the Audit and Risk Committee, has been extended for 12 months with effect from 1 January 2016.

His appointment will continue to involve a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per month. Remuneration for the role will continue to be at a rate of £13,137 per annum.

This appointment is made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Appointments are made on merit and political activity played no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Jonathan has not declared any political activity.

Chair and Non-Executive Directors appointments to Monitor and chair designate of the NHS Trust Development Authority

Ed Smith was appointed as chair of Monitor and chair designate of the NHS Trust Development Authority from 1 August 2015 for 3 years. His appointment involves a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per week and remuneration for the role is at a rate of £63,000 per annum.

Baroness Joan Hanham will continue as a non-executive director until the end of her current term on 31 March 2016 and will receive the standard NED rate of £7,883 per annum.

Lord Ara Darzi was appointed as a non-executive director of Monitor from 1 August 2015 for 3 years. His appointment involves a time commitment of one board meeting per month plus up to 2 days preparation. Remuneration for the role is at a rate of £7,883 per annum.

These appointments were made with the agreement of the Commissioner for Public Appointments. In accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Baroness Hanham is a Conservative party peer. Ed Smith has not declared any political activity. Professor Lord Darzi of Denham is a Labour peer and former Labour Minister.

Ed Smith is also non-executive chair of Crown Commercial Service and lead non-executive director at the Department for Transport.

Professor Sir John Bell has been reappointed as chair for 2 further years from 1 April 2015. As chair he will continue to receive £16,180 per annum, and the time commitment will be up to 24 days per year.

Professor Patrick Vallance’s appointment as an independent member has been extended for 1 year from 1 September 2015. There is no remuneration for this post and expenses will be offered in line with Department of Health policy. The time commitment continues to be up to 5 days per year.

Member appointments to the Advisory Board on the Registration of Homeopathic Products (ABRHP)

Dr Michael Evans was been reappointed for 1 year from 14 June 2015 and Professor Brian Lockwood has been reappointed from 1 October 2015 for 2 years. They will receive a meeting fee of £325 and expenses in line with the Medicine and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency policy. The time commitment is 6 meetings per year.

Member appointments to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA).

Professor David Archard has been reappointed as deputy chair of the HFEA from 1 November 2015 to 31 October 2016. His appointment will continue to involve a time commitment of 3 days per month and the remuneration will remain at a rate of £8,630 per annum.

Mrs Rebekah Dundas has been reappointed as the Audit and Governance Committee Chair of the HFEA from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2016. Her appointment will continue to involve a time commitment of 3 days per month and the remuneration will remain at a rate of £13,137 per annum.

Dr Andrew Greenfield has been reappointed as a member of the HFEA from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2018. His appointment will continue to involve a time commitment of 3 days per month and the remuneration will remain at a rate of £7,883 per annum.

These appointments are made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Appointment is made on merit and political activity played no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public.

Chair appointment to the Committee on Mutagenicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COM).

The appointment of Dr David Lovell, chair of COM, has been extended from 1 November 2015 to 31 October 2016.

This appointment will be for a time commitment of 3 COM meetings per year plus a requirement to be an ex-officio member of the Committee on Carcinogenicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COC) and attend 3 COC meetings per year. Remuneration for COM is at a rate of £158 per meeting and a reading fee of £40, for COC it is £123 per meeting and a £30 reading fee plus any travel and subsistence expenses where appropriate.

As the chair of COM, Dr Lovell will continue to be an ex officio member of the General Advisory Committee on Science (GACS), which provides independent expert advice to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) on the FSA’s use of science. GACS meets twice a year, its members receive a meeting fee of £205 plus travel and subsistence where appropriate.

This appointment is made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Appointments are made on merit and political activity played no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for an appointee’s political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Dr Lovell is a member of the Labour Party but not politically active.

Dr Lovell is also a Member of Committee on Carcinogenicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment, a Member of General Advisory Committee on Science and a Member of Grant Assessment Panel of the National Centre for the 3R’s.

Members appointments to Independent Reconfiguration Panel

The following people have been re-appointed as managerial members of the Independent Reconfiguration Panel for 2 years:

Chair appointment to Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens

Professor Christopher Whitty has been appointed chair from 1 October 2015 for 3 years. The time commitment is 5 days per year. There is no remuneration and expenses will be paid in line with Department of Health Policy.

Member appointment to Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infection

Professor David Livermore has been reappointed as member from 1 September 2015 for 3 years. His role will continue to involve a time commitment of up to 4 days per year. There is no remuneration for this role and expenses will be paid in line with Department of Health policy.

Appointment of Audit and Risk Committee Chair to NHS Business Services Authority

Andrew Flanagan, an existing non-executive director of NHS Business Services Authority, will take up post as chair of the Audit and Risk Committee of the Authority with effect from 1 December 2015.

The appointment will continue to involve a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per month. Remuneration for the role will be at a rate of £13,137 per annum, to reflect his role as chair of the Audit and Risk Committee with effect from 1 December 2015.

Non-Executive Director appointment to NHS Blood and Transplant

Roy Griffins, an existing non-executive director of NHS Blood and Transplant will take up post as chair of the Governance and Audit Committee of the Authority with effect from 1 August 2015.

The appointment will continue to involve a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per month. Remuneration for the role will be at a rate of £13,137 per annum, to reflect his role as chair of the Governance and Audit Committee.

In addition, he has been re-appointed for 3 years when his current term ends on the 31 December 2015.

This appointment is made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition

Professor Charlotte Wright has been appointed for 3 years beginning on 1 June 2015. Professor Ian MacDonald, Professor Paul Haggerty and Dr David Mela have each been reappointed through open competition for 3 years beginning on 1 June 2015, 1 January 2016 and 1 August 2015 respectively.

The following members have each been reappointed for 2 years:

The following members have each been reappointed for 3 years:

As members they will receive £160 per meeting and expenses in line with Public Health England policy. The time commitment is 10 days per year, including at least 3 meetings per year.

National Joint Registry Steering Committee

Mrs Laurel Powers-Freeling has been reappointed as chair from 1 April 2015 for 3 years. The time commitment will be approximately 12 to 17 days per year. As chair, Mrs Powers-Freeling will ensure that the Steering Committee discharges its role to ensure the finance and strategy of the NJR support both its function and continued development.

Professor Amar Rangan and Gillian Coward have been appointed as surgeon and patient members respectively both for 3 years. Professor Rangan’s term will commence on 1 June 2015 and Mrs Coward’s on 1 October 2015. The role will involve a time commitment of up to 4 Steering Committee meetings per year plus additional time to participate in sub-committee meetings as required. There is no remuneration and expenses will be paid in line with NHS England policy

Committee on the Carcinogenicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment

Professor Neil Pearce was been appointed as a member from 1 June 2015 for 3 years. The role will normally involve a time commitment of 3 meetings per year and will receive a fee of £123 per meeting and a reading fee of £30 per meeting. Expenses will be paid in line with Department of Health Policy.

Interim Chair appointment to the Care Quality Commission

Michael Mire, a non-executive director of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has been appointed as interim chair of the CQC with effect from 9 June 2015.

His appointment will be for 6 months or until a substantive chair is appointed, whichever is sooner.

The appointment will involve a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per week and remuneration for the role will be at a rate of £63,000 per annum.

This appointment is made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
