Details
In May 2019 powers, budgets and responsibilities will be passed down from central government to a new directly elected mayor in the North of Tyne area.
This follows similar elections in May 2017 in 6 regions across England:
- Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
- Greater Manchester
- Liverpool City Region
- Tees Valley
- West Midlands
- West of England
The mayor will represent their regions across the country and around the world. They will work with leaders of local councils and businesses to create jobs, boost skills, build homes and improve travel.
Though it is not adopting a directly elected mayor, Cornwall also took forward a devolution deal.
These guides provide more information about the powers and budgets being passed down to these English regions, and who will be responsible for what.
