Guaranteed public access days for Okehampton, Willsworthy and Merrivale 2026
The MOD is licensed to conduct live firing on the three Dartmoor Ranges for a limited number of days each year. On live firing days the MOD can prevent public access to the range areas in accordance with the byelaws that have been established.
Warning signals - red flags by day and red lamps by night - indicate that live firing is taking place. The range boundaries are marked by red and white poles and the public should not enter a live range as they will put themselves at risk.
The six week firing times notices can be found at Dartmoor firing programme.
- Day firing is between sunrise and sunset.
- Night firing is between sunset and sunrise.
Flags are lowered as soon as live firing ceases.
Any short notice cancellations will be broadcast each morning on BBC Radio Devon.
