Details

The lock cut bridge at Culham is a vitally important road crossing for the local area connecting the busy A415 with the B4016. The Environment Agency owns this road crossing as it was constructed when the lock cut was dug. Surveys have highlighted that the bridge abutments are in need of repair works as water is washing out material from the abutments. If left without repair this would eventually weaken the bridge structure and lead to collapse.

In order to repair the abutments, divers will be working under the water to construct shuttering around the bridge abutments. Once the shuttering is complete, grout will be poured in behind it to fill any voids and prevent further washout. In order to construct the shuttering under the water the divers need a good level of visibility, therefore it is not possible to carry out these works during the winter months.

As the bridge is very narrow it will not be possible for boats to pass whilst the divers are working in the water. Due to the nature of the works the divers will be moving in and out of the water during working hours. When there are no divers in the water it will be possible for boats to pass as directed by the site team. The works will be carried out in such a way to minimise disruption to boats but at times there may be delays of a few hours to passage through Culham Lock.

If travelling downstream (from Abingdon) please wait at the head layby until the site team confirm it is okay to proceed through the lock. If travelling upstream (from Clifton) please wait at the tail layby on the downstream side of the bridge until directed to proceed.

The site team will stop works and allow free passage between 12pm to 1pm on weekdays. Passage will be unrestricted outside of working hours (weekdays 9am to 5pm).

If you need swift passage through Culham Lock on Mondays to Fridays during this period please plan to passage before 9am or after 5pm, or at lunchtime 12pm to 1pm. There will be no work at weekends and therefore passage will be unrestricted on Saturdays and Sundays.
