The Office for Equality and Opportunity researched the drivers of confidence in maternal care services in England to gain evidence from ethnic minority women on their experiences of using the services. This was supported by evidence from a rapid evidence review of recent work in this space.

The exploratory qualitative research ran from January to May 2024. It involved a series of focus groups and in-depth interviews with ethnic minority women and maternity staff in Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol and London.

The research found that ethnic minority women face specific barriers in accessing services and engaging with maternity care staff. These barriers erode these mothers’ confidence in the maternity care services and could affect their clinical outcomes.
